Egna in the Adige Valley
A feeling of bygone times
The historical village of Egna lies on 217 hm and, already in the Middle Ages, the main place of the Bassa Atesina was a center for the trade between north and south. The strategic geographical location gave the village an important position and also the famous freedom fighter Andreas Hofer was locked up here on his way to Mantua one night in one of the dark cellars.
Today, Neumarkt is considered a cultural centre of the South Tyrolean lowlands and has city-like character - through the picturesque arcades in the centre and buildings in high density. Since 2014, Egna can also count among the most beautiful villages in Italy ("Borghi più belli d'Italia").
Pure nostalgia can be experienced at the Museum of Popular Culture, where ordinary everyday items from bygone times are exhibited.
Countless hiking trails lead through the adjacent nature parc Monte Corno and invite to extensive exploratory tours in nature which is particularly impressive here.
